Celebrating the cycle of creation and creativity, through the lens of a story that is both unique and intrinsic to Aotearoa.
Chamber Music New Zealand’s 2025 season features some of the most beautiful music composed, with key themes centering around the journey of life.
In developing the narrative for the 2025 season we collaborated with Johnson McKay (Ngāti Rongomaiwahine, Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Mahuta, Ngāti Porou) who composed a karakia based on the Māori creation story to express the three stages of creativity.
Te Kore, where all elements for creation are present, but yet to be awakened. Te Pō, in which life is nurtured and grows. Te Ao Mārama, in which the creation enters into the world of light, to be experienced.
The karakia, woven throughout the brochure, explores each phase of the musical creative process through the stages of Te Kore, Te Pō and Te Ao Mārama. This creative process commences with the awakening of sound in the mind of the composer. It develops depth of emotion and thought, complexity of connections and ideas. Finally, the music enters into the world of light, to be experienced by both performer and audience. This is a cycle of creative energy - repeating, evolving and bringing new things to life in Te Ao Mārama.
